MUSIC
We have a very strong and active Music department led by the Director of Music, Mr Francis Murton. Individual music lessons are usually accommodated in the routine school day, and around two hundred pupils learn instruments. There are many opportunities to perform, and this is encouraged: young people tend to practise more if if there is a concert on the horizon! Regular events include House Concerts, the Debut Musicians' Concert which is for new pupils only, in their first term; the Christmas Concert and the Summer Concert. We try to ensure that musical and sporting activities do not clash, and we encourage pupils to take part in both.
There is a large active Choir of over 50 voices, including boys and girls of all ages and some staff. The Choir perform an annual choral concert along with the Community Choir, which welcomes singers from the local area.
We have an active orchestra and a concert band, not to mention a number of pop groups which flourish in Houses and across the school. There is also a particularly good jazz band which performs an annual concert. The musicians join tours just as sports teams do. Following successful tours to Boston in 2008 and Monaco in 2010, a trip is planned to Italy in 2012.
Finally, the Music department is next door to the school theatre, and musical theatre productions are a regular feature of Wrekin life. Recent musicals include Oliver, Joseph, South Pacific and Bugsy Malone.
