CAREERS SERVICE

The main aim of Wrekin’s Careers Service is to support our pupils to make informed choices about their future educational and careers decisions through:

  • Raising pupils’ self awareness and encouraging the development of key core competencies and life skills
  • Helping and supporting pupils explore the world of work and a wide range of different career options
  • Providing impartial careers advice, information and guidance.

Much of this careers programme can be delivered with the help of a network of associates, be they staff and governors, current or past parents, former pupils and Old Wrekinians, local business people, and professional careers advisers. The theory goes that like the notion of the ‘six degrees of separation’, through our collective web of personal and professional contacts we can probably effect introductions for our pupils to almost any sphere of the world of work and so provide much needed advice, information and guidance. We are therefore very keen to involve Old Wrekinians as much as possible in the recently launched Wrekin College Careers Network, and following the plea for OWs to join the network a number of you, from a variety of different professions have volunteered their support.

Many of our pupils in the Fifth and Sixth form take part in psychometric testing. Results are shared with them, and indicate the type of professions and ways of working for which their personalities, abilities and preferences might be best suited. This helps pupils to decide on the type of work experience placements they should be thinking of arranging for the end of the summer term.

Whether you feel that you can help us directly by meeting with pupils to give specialist individual guidance, or if there is an opportunity to come and speak to our pupils about your chosen career path and experience, or indeed if you think that you could help to arrange work experience placements for our pupils, please do get in touch.
