“Only connect…” is a frequently quoted phrase of the novelist EM Forster which describes what the Chapel attempts to be and to do. Wrekin Chapel is the nerve centre of the school and the focus of our life together where all kinds of connections are made and fostered.
Worship and our connection with God is the first priority in Chapel and we have a regular pattern of weekly worship, which underpins and encourages our Christian ethos and spiritual values and gives us a connection with a bigger picture. On Sundays there is a variety of different styles of worship and occasional use of alternative venues, like the Studio, for acts of worship as well as the regular highlights in Chapel of Whole School Services, especially on Remembrance Sunday, Christmas Carols and the Leavers’ Hymns of Praise Service.
We have a variety of people who participate in leading and speaking in Chapel services, both from within the school, teachers and pupils, and regular visitors. We seek to promote good relationships and connections both within the community and between the members of our community and the world beyond.
We have a great tradition of Chapel music, good hymn singing and a very good choir. Our Director of Music is an outstanding all-round musician who is passionate about developing all our musical connections. Concerts and recitals, as well as occasional musical items played by pupils before Chapel, are a regular feature of the Chapel calendar.
The Chapel is a place where intellectual curiosity is encouraged. It is an occasional venue for inter-House debates on issues of topical concern and also the place where House and school charitable endeavours are promoted regularly.
A song from the Iona Community, which we sing in Chapel entitled A Touching Place is really what it is all about. A place where we connect with one another in community, with the wider world and where we are constantly reminded of the good news that “Christ makes with his friends a touching place.” It is above all a place where we get in touch with ourselves and with the God who loves us.
