Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Day Walk
Sunday, 21 January 2018
Sunday 21st January saw the final training day walk for the Fourth Form girls and the remaining boys who are doing the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award this summer. They planned the walk during their activities sessions and this was their chance to see how the deskwork transferred to the hills, especially the route cards they had made.
On the day it was snowing with a bitingly cold wind but spirits and enthusiasm were high. We arrived at Church Stretton and the pupils split into groups and went into the hills with their instructor.
The pupils were able to practise teamwork, map reading skills, use of the compass and the Country Code. They also learnt the value of having a good route card - planning an expedition is best done in the warmth of a classroom! The weather was very testing indeed and this added to the skills that they learnt - they really did need all of the warm clothes we told them to bring.
We will now focus on planning for the unsupported two-day expedition in the summer.
