GCSE RESULTS

After strong A Level results last week, Wrekin College students are today celebrating high GCSE results. A high percentage of all grades were A* or A with many students achieving a whole batch of top grades.

Leading the way is Orla McCormack from Shrewsbury with 10 straight A* grades. Whilst studying for her GCSEs, Orla also found time to gain the ATCL (Associate of Trinity College London) certificate in Alto Saxophone performance. Other very strong performers locally include James Davis, Tait Furnival, Felix de Hamel, Freya Rooke-Moore, Henry Phillips, Joseph Lee who has just returned from three weeks in South Africa with the CCF and Holly Townson. Andy Liu, who only joined the school last September from mainland China, gained 5 A* GCSEs in addition to the 6 A level mathematics modules he also sat, gaining 100% on 4 of those and very high scores on the others.

Retiring Headmaster, Dr Haydn Griffiths, congratulates all of the pupils and their teachers on all their hard work and success and looks forward to watching their future progress under the guidance of the incoming Headmaster, Tim Firth, who is eagerly anticipating seeing them flourish in the Sixth Form.

Dr Griffiths commented, “Pupils and their teachers have worked very hard for these results and they thoroughly deserve their success. I know that they appreciate the support that they have had from the school and also from their families. Wrekin has a wide academic reach and it is satisfying that so many of our pupils have exceeded their challenging target grades. We look forward to welcoming them back into our innovative Sixth Form programme in September.”

Tim Firth added, "Good to see our pupils perform in-line with expectations this year, instilling confidence in pupils and parents. Girls have performed well as they did last week at A level, and clearly the co-educational aspect of academic life is in good heart.

It is heartening to see how many pupils have done well whilst also being involved in, and excelling at, other aspects of school life. Wrekin offers so many opportunities to pupils and stretches them in and out of the classroom. It is this provision that prepares our pupils to become successful employees who can work in and lead teams in future careers.

The academic achievement of a few pupils has been absolutely outstanding by any standards nationally, and it's good to see that we cater for and challenge the very brightest children here at Wrekin."

Well done to everyone!
