We are so proud to announce that Mr Platford, the Director of Music at Wrekin College has been shortlisted for the 2017 Music Teacher Awards for Excellence.
Simon Platford MBE will compete for the Musicians’ Union Inspiration Award alongside some of the UK’s brightest talent in music teaching, including the choirmaster of the Belfast Opera and head of music at Mildenhall College Academy.
Created to celebrate excellence in music and performing arts education, the awards will be presented in 13 categories, covering new products and resources as well as hubs, music departments and individual contributions to the sector.
“This year’s awards have seen a wide range of extremely strong nominations, highlighting some of the superb work being done by music educators across the UK,” said Alex Stevens, editor of Music Teacher magazine and chair of the awards judging panel.
“We are delighted to reveal our shortlist and look forward to celebrating the best of the music education sector in February.”
Tim Firth, headmaster at Wrekin College, said: "Simon has a remarkable ability to elicit high standards of musicianship from Wrekin's pupils because he expects great things from them and has confidence in them to deliver. His confidence is infectious. He combines high standards with good humour and has the ability to stretch all musicians whether they are starting out or expert.”
In her nomination of Mr Platford, music scholar Emily Burton said: “Musicians of all ages and backgrounds shine because he takes the time to listen, offer support and advice and more importantly make a difference.
“Every single performer at Wrekin College is valued and nurtured to succeed. For me personally, I have never had the privilege to work with somebody that takes so much time to care, my music is incredibly important to me, and Mr Platford always ensures it is just as important to him. That is the sign of someone that is not only inspirational but quite exceptional.”
We look forward to 9 February 2017 when winners will be announced at a gala.
