Amy Engineers her way to Farming

Amy Phillips - fourth form, Clarkson - spent a challenging and stimulating three days at various venues across the region working towards her Routes into STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) EDT Industrial Cadets Bronze qualification.

Amy who intends to go to Harper Adams agricultural university and pursue a career in engineering in a farming setting tells us she had a very exciting time on this varied course and learned a huge amount. Amy reports back about the course:

"There were 27 of us, the first day was at Telford College of Arts and Technology (TCAT) where I learned about health and safety and spent the day in engineering workshops and career talks including Robot Arm mechanics, Mechatronic rigs and Pneumatics rigs - I loved these and really enjoyed programming the robotic arm. I met engineering apprentices and heard about what they do at the college and what to expect.

"The next day was at the Telford Innovation campus of Wolverhampton Univeristy, we worked on Wolverhampton University Racing (UWR) F3 racing cars and there was a competition to see which team could replace a tyre in the fastest time. During this day I also had talks on chemical engineering - this was very hard to understand but very interesting. It was useful to find out what it would be like to be a student at the university.

"On the last day we visited Facenda Foods in Telford where we were able to see robotic arms at work and learned about food safety. The company tour was amazing - the smell was not so great. I learned such a lot over this three days and met lots of new people, I'm very proud to have graduated with a Bronze Industrial Cadet award and really looking forward to taking my silver award."

We are very excited to see this kind of opportunity available for our pupils and pleased that Amy had such a great time.
