The Wrekin College Under 13 girls' hockey team played brilliantly in the Shropshire In2Hockey County Championship final against Church Stretton School and won 3-0 making them the Shropshire In2Hockey County Champions! An almost identical team have also been crowned County Under 13 netball champions, and also got through to the last eight teams in the English Schools Under 13 Netball Cup.
Sandra Pattinson reports on the hockey victory:
'The Under 13 girls' hockey team from Wrekin competed in the Shropshire In2Hockey seven-a-side tournament at Thomas Telford School on 1 March, and were targeting the title and qualification for the Midlands round of the competition.
'The first match was against Moreton Hall School. Wrekin started well and had a number of chances in front of goal, but it was only after captain Poppy Jones fired home a cross from Maya Richards that the team broke the deadlock securing a 1-0 win and a good start to the competition. Next up were Shrewsbury High School B team. Wrekin dominated possession, but found it impossible to find a way through the three-girl defence. Shrewsbury High School scored a goal on the break leaving the Wrekin College team slightly shocked by their 1-0 defeat.
'Equilibrium was restored with a 3-1 victory over William Brookes A. A sensational goal into the top of the net from Molly Shepherd got the team off to a flying start before Poppy added another two goals. There could have been more goals with chances for Megan Redwood, Molly, Isola, Maya and Annie, but the match finished 3-1 to Wrekin after William Brookes School had scored a consolation goal.
'The final game in Pool B was against Moele Brace School, who caught Wrekin College on the hop to score early in the match. Isola scored to draw level, but Meole Brace School edged ahead again and won 2-1. An injury to Millie Hodge lead to her having to leave the field of play after putting in a strong defensive performance in all the group games.
'With Moele Brace School winning all their group games it left three teams tied below them on six points. Wrekin College finished second in the group on goal difference, and squeezed into the semi-final by the narrowest of margins…one goal to be precise.
'Wrekin College came up against Shrewsbury High School A in the semi-final, and the team were determined that they would not be on the losing side against Shrewsbury High School this time. They played hockey of an extremely high quality, had numerous chances to score and did everything except put the ball into the goal! The resulting 0-0 scoreline lead to a dreaded penalty shoot-out, with penalty shuttles. Each team selected three players to take the penalties. Each player would start on the halfway line and have ten seconds in which to run into the D and try to score. Shrewsbury High School scored their first penalty past Milla Furnival in the Wrekin College goal but Annie equalised with a sneaky nutmeg on the Shrewsbury High School goalkeeper. The second Shrewsbury High School player advanced towards the D, but our very own Maddie Hinch closed the player down, saved the shot and cleared the ball out of the circle. Isola Egerton was up next, and drove into the D, calmly rounded the Shrewsbury High School keeper and slotted the ball home to score. Shrewsbury’s third player stepped up, but was no match for Milla, who once again cleared the ball out of the circle to end the penalty competition with a 2-1 victory to Wrekin College and with Poppy possibly heaving a sigh of relief at not having to take the final Wrekin College penalty.
'And so to the final versus Church Stretton School. With qualification for the Midlands Regional competition already secured by winning the semi, the final was all about pride…and silverware! Wrekin College made a great start when a penalty stroke awarded for a Church Stretton School foot on the goal-line was calmly fired past the keeper by Poppy. Once again Wrekin College dominated the game, and the defensive team of Annie, Jess Maddocks and Charlotte Hawkins helped to keep a clean sheet. A further two goals were added by Poppy to give a 3-0 victory and the well-deserved title of County Champions.
'Wrekin College squad: Milla Furnival, Jess Maddocks, Millie Hodge, Charlotte Hawkins, Annie Grimsdale, Maya Richards, Isola Egerton, Megan Redwood, Molly Shepherd, Poppy Jones (captain).'
Well played everyone!
