Wrekin Senior: 11+ entry; Year 7 to Year 8 (Lancaster)

We welcome pupils from Wrekin Prep, and a huge variety of other primary schools, into Lancaster House at Year 7.

Lancaster boys between lessons

Some individuals who join us may already know others, while many arrive without knowing anyone. However, a series of team-building days, specifically designed to facilitate a smooth and joyful transition to senior school, ensure that it doesn’t take long for everyone to feel at home.

When joining in Year 7 and 8 your child will become a member of Lancaster House. Lancaster is a special area of the school for our younger pupils where they can be full members of the Wrekin community, but with extra support and nurturing for these initial years. Lancaster forms the pupils’ day-to-day base, where they register, get changed for Games and PE, store their belongings and enjoy their breaks. Lancaster became a co-educational House in 2025, having previously been split into Lancaster Boys and Lancaster Girls. Lancaster boarders board in another single-sex boarding house (either Hadden for girls or Bayley for boys), but spend their days in Lancaster with their peers.

Lancaster House, fully refurbished in 2025, sits at the heart of campus.

Entrance Assessments for 11+:

Entry to Wrekin for those pupils not already at Wrekin Prep is via our own Entrance Assessment. Once you have registered your child, you will be asked to complete our 11+ Entrance Assessment Application Form. Our 11+ Entrance Assessments assess potential pupils’ ability to cope with the academic life at Wrekin; if a pupil shows this potential and places are available, a place may be offered. No special preparation is required or expected for this Assessment which consists of online adaptive tests plus an English paper. Those that do particularly well in their 11+ Entrance Assessment will be invited back to sit the 11+ Academic Scholarship involving extension papers and an interview with the Headmaster.

Wrekin Prep pupils gain automatic entrance to Wrekin Senior as long as we can continue to meet their needs. There is no need for a Wrekin Prep pupil to sit the Entrance Assessment. The only exception to this is if you would like your child to potentially be chosen to sit for an academic scholarship. In this case, your child would need to sit the Entrance Assessment; if their scores meet the criteria for that year they will be invited back to sit the Academic Scholarship. The expert staff at Wrekin Prep can advise if your child is a potential candidate for Academic Scholarship.

Wrekin offers a number of different scholarships for pupils who show exceptional ability and promise in a particular area, as well as the ability to inspire and act as a role model for others. Scholarships can be accompanied by a financial reward. The following scholarships are available for Wrekin Senior: Academic, Art, Music, Sport, Dance, Drama or All-Rounder (known at Wrekin as a Pendle Award). You can choose for your child to be assessed for a scholarship by filling in the appropriate sections on the Entrance Assessment Application Form.

Entrance and scholarship assessments are held in the November of the preceding academic year of entry. Those applying from Wrekin Prep are given priority for places, with offers for those joining us from elsewhere being sent out in the following January.
