supporting all abilities
Able to Thrive
The aim of the department is to help learners learn by offering excellent provision for all pupils, regardless of their underlying abilities. The Support for Learning team work closely with teaching staff to ensure a seamless integration of specialised support, creating an inclusive environment where every learner is able to thrive.
Identifying Need
Pupils are assessed on entry to Wrekin College with regard to their reading and spelling ability. These scores are then used to identify pupils who may need additional support in these areas. Information is also passed on to Wrekin from our feeder primary schools, as well as from classroom teachers, to help build a picture of support needs. Once identified, an Individual Education Plan is written for each pupil, which contains details of support strategies as well as educational targets, which are assessed termly.
Support for Learning Needs
Some pupils may need extra support with specific learning differences, such as dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia. There is also support with regard to study skills, organisational skills and booster sessions for pupils experiencing a temporary difficulty in a subject area. The Support for Learning Department can support pupils for the long term, or on a temporary basis, depending on their needs. Lessons are tailored to the individual needs of the pupil and are charged in addition to school fees.
Staff Awareness and Referrals
IEPs are written and shared with all staff, so that they are aware of strategies and classroom practices that will help all pupils access the curriculum. The SENCo will advise staff when any new information comes into Wrekin, so that they are updated on any new strategies that may help pupils in their learning. If a member of staff has any concerns, they can refer to the SENCo, who will then investigate fully by talking to other staff members and if necessary, parents
Exam Access Arrangements.
As like all other schools, Wrekin will apply for Exam Access Arrangements for pupils, following the JCQ guidelines. For a pupil at Wrekin and any other school to have Exam Access Arrangements in place for any external exams, there must be evidence of need and these being used as a normal way of working.
