Broadening Horizons

Life outside the classroom

We are proud of the full and varied life our children enjoy outside the classroom, broadening their personal horizons and enhancing our academic curriculum.

We believe that life outside the classroom is vital to a child's confidence and ability to face and conquer the challenges they will face in life. Trips to local places of interest bring learning to life, enhance what goes on in the classroom, and develops important life skills.

From Year 3 every child goes on a residential trip once a year. In Year 3 it is just two nights away, but the time and challenges progress as children move through the school. The children have a go at all manner of activities designed to challenge them and equip them with a variety of leadership opportunities and important life skills, in addition to confidence and team building, leading into the Character Adventure Training programme at Wrekin Senior. Without doubt, when you ask the children their favourite memories when they leave Wrekin Prep they always say their residential trips.

We also operate a skiing trip (in 2025 this was to Austria) for our two oldest year groups, together with Years 7 and 8 at Wrekin Senior. This is also a firm highlight for those children who participate.

HORIZONS PROGRAMME (AFTER-SCHOOL CARE)

The Wrekin Prep Horizons programme has a comprehensive range of different activities designed to enhance and expand on our already excellent curriculum focused on four key areas - sports, academia, the arts and life skills. Activities for Upper School can include cricket, swimming and tennis clubs together with STEM, coding, language and philosophy sessions. A similarly ambitious programme in the Horizons scheme for Lower School children includes dance, Fun with Food, Beatrix Potter, tennis and yoga. Many of these activities are provided for no additional cost; those which involve the expertise of an outside provider may incur a small charge.

The Horizons programme operates at the end of the school day (which is 3.30pm for Reception-Year 2 and 4.20pm for Year 3-6) thus allowing an additional hour of curriculum expansion and expert level care. Horizons activities are not compulsory, and parents are free to choose how many, and which ones they would like their child to take part in.
