Thrive in English and Beyond

English as an Additional Language (EAL)

At Wrekin College, we are proud to welcome pupils from all over the world into our inclusive and friendly school community.

We know that learning in a new language can be both exciting and challenging, and we’re here to support each pupil as they grow in confidence, make lasting friendships, and develop their English skills.

From the moment they arrive, our international pupils are carefully assessed to ensure we understand their English language level and learning needs. This helps us create the right lesson plans and support systems so that every pupil can thrive. For those staying more than one year, annual placement tests help track progress and tailor support even further.

To make sure pupils are placed in the most appropriate learning groups, all international students take baseline assessments. Regular marking and feedback help reinforce learning and celebrate progress.

We prepare our pupils for globally recognised English qualifications, including the Cambridge First Certificate, CAE, and CPE. Pupils staying for more than a year will have the opportunity to take these exams at local centres. Many Sixth Form students also work towards the IELTS exam, which is widely accepted by universities in the UK and other English-speaking countries.

Every international pupil whose first language is not English receives a weekly 55-minute EAL (English as an Additional Language) lesson, along with a Saturday morning clinic focused on exam skills. If a pupil needs additional support to access the curriculum, we can provide extra one-to-one EAL lessons at an additional hourly rate.

If you’d like to know more about the support we offer, our Admissions Team would be delighted to answer your questions and guide you through the process.
