Debating

Our debating programme is hugely popular, with Houses competing throughout the academic year to win both senior and junior debating competitions. Debating offers students invaluable opportunities to develop a diverse skill set that extends well beyond the classroom. Engaging in structured debates enhances critical thinking, as students learn to assess complex issues from multiple perspectives and construct well-reasoned arguments. This analytical approach fosters improved problem-solving abilities and prepares students for informed decision-making in various contexts.

History and Politics Society

Our weekly HisPol Soc meetings bring together students passionate about history and politics, offering a platform for discussion, exploration, and debate. With guest speakers from a variety of fields, students are exposed to expert insights on fascinating and relevant topics, broadening their understanding of the world around them.

Model United Nations

Wrekin College regularly participates in Model United Nations (MUN) conferences. MUN is a simulation of the United Nations where students role-play as delegates from different countries, participating in simulated UN committees and debating global issues. Participants learn about international relations, diplomacy, and the UN's role in world affairs.

ACADEMIC POSTER CONFERENCE

A highlight of our academic calendar, this prestigious competition invites Year 10 and 12 students to delve into research at a level akin to postgraduate study. Participants design an academic poster on a subject of their choice and present their findings in an environment reminiscent of a university viva. This immersive experience hones research skills, critical thinking, and persuasive communication – invaluable for future academic and professional pursuits.

Square Circle
(Gifted and Talented Programme)

Our gifted and talented programme, Square Circle, is open to students by invitation but also welcomes those eager to push their academic boundaries. Designed to stretch and challenge, this initiative provides opportunities for students to expand their knowledge, develop new skills, and explore their interests in a stimulating environment.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

The EPQ is highly regarded at Wrekin College, with support and guidance every step of the way. It holds significant merit for both university admissions and prospective employers, as it demonstrates a student's ability to complete independent learning and critical thinking. EPQs are also worth UCAS points, making them a valuable activity for those wanting to apply for university. With guidance from our academic staff, students embark on their own project, researching their chosen topic and producing a written report on their findings. They then present their research to an audience, and answer questions on it.

Academic CLINICS

For those who wish to extend their learning further, our voluntary Saturday clinics provide additional academic support across most subjects. These sessions reinforce classroom learning while allowing students to explore topics in greater depth.

Krebs Society (MedSoc)

This is our society especially designed for those keen on pursuing careers in the Medical field.
