Leadership and Futures

Confidence and Responsibility
Leadership opportunities are essential for fostering well-rounded, responsible, and engaged pupils, equipping them with critical life skills. By offering leadership opportunities we help our students to develop confidence, resilience and a strong sense of responsibility. Students learn to make thoughtful, considered decisions, collaborate effectively and navigate challenges with empathy and integrity. By teaching leadership skills, Wrekin prepares its students to take on responsibility and prepare them for leadership challenges which may come later in life.
There are leadership opportunities through our Character Adventure Training programme which encompasses the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme, our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) as well as the Employability curriculum.
There is also the opportunity to become a prefect when in Upper Sixth (Year 13) which is a position of great responsibility amongst the Wrekin community. Students can apply to become a prefect in a wide variety of areas across the school and successful candidates enjoy a position of responsibility which younger pupils aspire to.
Lead and Challenge
Character Adventure Training
Our CCF Army and RAF sections, Duke of Edinburgh award scheme and our Employability curriculum work hand in hand to form our landmark Character Adventure Training programme, giving students the opportunity to develop key life skills to succeed in life after Wrekin. We believe that working within and leading teams, challenging yourself and experiencing life outside the comfort zone is the only way to prepare for life after education.
All pupils and students will experience these things throughout their time at Wrekin, and it is this that we think makes Wrekinians not just future-proof, but future-creators.
Employability
Employability at Wrekin: Preparing Pupils for Life Beyond School
Employability is woven into every stage of life at Wrekin, teaching essential life skills that prepare pupils to become the employees, employers, and entrepreneurs of the future.
Our Business School and whole-school programmes offer real-world experiences through guest lectures, enterprise projects like the student-run Expresso coffee van, and our Careers Festival featuring business leaders and workshops. These opportunities help pupils build connections, gain practical skills, and confidently step into their chosen careers.
Duke of Edinburgh
Inspiration and Transformation
For the past seven decades, the Duke of Edinburgh's Award has inspired and transformed the lives of millions of young people from all walks of life. From volunteering to physical activities, life skills to expeditions, achieving a DofE Award is a passport to a brighter future, valued by employers and universities. The DofE is enthusiastically supported by highly dedicated staff, and the take up at Wrekin is impressive, and has been for a number of years.
In Year 10, most pupils join the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme at Bronze level, and many progress to Gold levels. Our DofE team work hard to make sure that the rigours of the awards, particularly at Gold level can be balanced successfully with students' other commitments. Success at the higher levels represents a significant personal achievement, valued by universities and employers, and we are very proud that Wrekin’s completion rate is substantially above the national average.
Leadership and Adventure
Combined Cadet Force
The skills learned and challenges encountered during their participation in the Combined Cadet Force scheme stay with our pupils and students for life. Both are enthusiastically supported by highly dedicated staff, and the take up at Wrekin is impressive. At Wrekin, we have both an army and RAF section and pupils and students can choose which they choose to take part in, depending on their own personal interests.
All of our Year 9 pupils participate in CCF, and many stay on in more senior roles, some gaining their pilots’ licence before they leave school or being selected for prestigious Cadet leadership courses. Experiences at military bases and our annual Field Days are frequently mentioned among the highlights of our pupils’ and students' experiences, and serving personnel make a valuable contribution to the Wrekin experience.
