rewarding responsibility
Preparing for life after wrekin
Life in the Sixth Form comes with more freedom, and with that more individual responsibility, easing the transition to life post-Wrekin.
At Wrekin we work hard to balance the increased freedom which comes from being a Sixth Form student, with the need for dedication to academic study, as well as co-curricular activities. For those achieving and maintaining a high ‘effort grade’, assessed in our Target Grade system, there are additional privileges upon being awarded a Sixth Form privilege card. Not only does the privilege card encourage effort and dedication to their lessons and independent learning, it also promotes maintenance of that effort over a sustained period of time.
Privileges, exclusively reserved for our Sixth Form students, include:
Change in uniform
Sixth Formers are allowed to attend school in business attire, rather than school uniform. They can wear a black, navy or grey suit and a plain shirt in any colour. For those with a Sixth Form privilege card there is the option to participate in ‘Dress Down Friday’.
Mobile telephones
While those at the lower end of the school have to lock and leave their phones in House during the school day, Sixth Formers are permitted to keep their phones with them. Phones must be on silent and away during lessons, unless needed for the lesson itself.
Access to Sixth Form Centre
Our Sixth Form Centre is at the heart of our Year 12 and 13 social life. Relocated and updated in 2018, this is a dedicated space for relaxing, socialising and working, exclusively for Sixth Formers. There are various Sixth Form only social nights throughout the year, including our popular Pizza and Prep nights.
‘Down Town’
All members of the Sixth Form are allowed to leave the school grounds for one hour on a Wednesday and Friday to visit nearby Wellington, just a few minutes walk from campus. This is affectionately known at Wrekin as as going ‘down town’.
Sixth Form Privilege Card
Sixth Form students can earn a privilege card if their effort grades across all subjects average at more than 2.7. Members of the Upper Sixth with a privilege card can sign out and go ‘down town’ during private study periods (for a maximum of 90 minutes) during afternoons, and only after receiving their afternoon registration mark. Students must not miss a commitment (eg. music lesson, practice, training session, CCF etc). Students must sign out at the Headmaster’s Office, and show their card.
During afternoon private study periods, Upper Sixth students can also use the school gym provided it is free and that they have had an induction. Privilege cards must be shown to Sports Hall staff on arrival. Lower Sixth students with a privilege card can study independently during a private study period, rather than within a supervised prep session.
