Beyond the Classroom

An Intellectual Adventure

At Wrekin College, academic life extends far beyond the classroom. Our dynamic co-curricular programme is designed to inspire, challenge, and engage pupils in a rich intellectual experience that prepares them for higher education and beyond. With a focus on curiosity, debate, research, and real-world application, our academic enrichment opportunities ensure that every pupil has the chance to thrive.

Academic Poster Conference

A highlight of our academic calendar, this prestigious competition invites Year 10 and 12 pupils to delve into research at a level akin to postgraduate study. Participants design an academic poster on a subject of their choice and present their findings in an environment reminiscent of a university viva. This immersive experience hones research skills, critical thinking, and persuasive communication – invaluable for future academic and professional pursuits.

Debating – A Culture of Critical Thought

Debating is at the heart of intellectual life at Wrekin. With three separate series of competitions running throughout the year for Lancaster, Senior, and Sixth Form pupils, there are opportunities for weekly engagement in high-level discourse. Our lively and well-attended Debating Club further nurtures confident speakers who learn to articulate, argue, and think on their feet – essential skills for university and the workplace.

History and Politics Society (HisPol Soc)

Our weekly HisPol Soc meetings bring together pupils passionate about history and politics, offering a platform for discussion, exploration, and debate. With guest speakers from a variety of fields, pupils are exposed to expert insights on fascinating and relevant topics, broadening their understanding of the world around them.

Model United Nations (MUN)

Wrekin pupils have the opportunity to engage in global affairs through our vibrant MUN programme. This hands-on experience in diplomacy and international relations enables pupils to research and represent nations, debate key issues, and develop solutions to some of the world’s most pressing challenges.

Saturday Subject Clinics

For those who wish to extend their learning further, our voluntary Saturday clinics provide additional academic support across most subjects. These sessions reinforce classroom learning while allowing pupils to explore topics in greater depth.

Library Committee – Bringing Learning to Life

Our Library Committee leads whole-school events designed to foster a love of reading and intellectual curiosity. From creative World Book Day celebrations featuring staff and pupils in costume to interactive pop-up performances, the Library Committee ensures that academic life is engaging and inspiring.

Peer Learning and Mentorship

Our academic prefects play a pivotal role in fostering a collaborative learning environment. Through peer reading initiatives with Lancaster pupils, they help instil a love of literature and enhance literacy skills across the school community.

Innovative Tutorial Programme

Wrekin College runs bespoke tutorial programmes tailored to different pupil needs, including our dedicated Study Skills Programme for Lancaster pupils. These sessions equip pupils with essential techniques for effective learning, revision, and time management, ensuring they maximise their academic potential.

Square Circle – A Programme for the Exceptionally Curious

Our gifted and talented programme, Square Circle, is open to pupils by invitation but also welcomes those eager to push their academic boundaries. Designed to stretch and challenge, this initiative provides opportunities for pupils to expand their knowledge, develop new skills, and explore their interests in a stimulating environment.

A Culture of Academic Excellence

At Wrekin College, we believe that intellectual curiosity, academic rigour, and a love of learning should be at the centre of everything we do. Our co-curricular academic programme is not just an extension of the classroom but a vital part of our pupils’ educational journey, providing them with the confidence, skills, and experience to excel in the future.
