Designed for the Individual

Full potential, eager for challenge

When Sir John Bayley founded Wrekin College in 1880, he wanted to establish a school that would be different. In particular, he said “the danger of any school is that of falling into a narrow groove of teaching all children as though they were turned out by Mother Nature in stereotyped fashion, of failing to realise that any successful school is one where each pupil receives individual attention”.

This philosophy has been Wrekin’s guiding principle ever since, contributing to our aim of providing exceptional education standards that enable every pupil to achieve their best.

More Than Grades

Academic Ambition Meets Personal Growth

Everything offered at Wrekin is designed to stretch and challenge our pupils and make them better people, for life. Academic achievement is at the heart of all we do; we foster an ethos of encouraging our pupils to be the very best they can be, and their own personal bests are all they are ever measured against.

Together with our Character Adventure Training, which marries Employability with the skills learned in our Duke of Edinburgh Award programme and our Combined Cadet Force, Wrekin truly offers the all-round curriculum necessary for 21st Century life.

Our Ethos

Founded in 1880 by Sir John Bayley, the school still works to his original philosophy of providing individual attention to individual pupils. Wrekin Senior is:

  • A school which provides a holistic education, adding value to the lives of every pupil; a school which every child believes is ‘their school’, and where every child has an equal chance to contribute;
  • A school that is forward-thinking whilst being proud of its traditions;
  • A school where pupils understand that a first-rate education is a privilege, and one they have a duty to live up to;
  • A school that challenges every pupil to be the best version of themselves academically and in all other ways;
  • A school that is inclusive and where different types of people want to know and accept each other and a school that takes seriously its commitment to prepare pupils for life beyond the classroom as well as our role in a local and global community.

Our Aims

Wrekin Senior is a community where the individual matters. We expect that pupils should behave in a sensible and civilised manner with due consideration for other people, their property and their safety. The guiding principles are courtesy, kindness and common sense.

  • To create a community in which all members – pupils, staff and support staff – feel valued and involved.

  • To offer the highest quality of education in a co-educational environment, developing intellectual, physical, aesthetic, moral and spiritual qualities in the school’s Christian tradition.

  • To nurture interesting and balanced young people in a happy and challenging environment, enabling them to fulfil their potential and preparing them for the modern world.

  • To develop in each pupil self-discipline, a clear sense of right and wrong, responsibility and sensitivity towards others and their views.

  • To recognise and celebrate individual achievements.

  • To instil a sense of pride in our traditions of good conduct, courtesy and appearance.

  • To foster respect and care for our environment.

History

Character and Confidence Built Through Experience

Wrekin College was founded in 1880 by Sir John Bayley with a bold idea: that every child should be seen as an individual. His belief that education should prepare young people for life beyond the classroom still shapes everything we do today.

Rooted in tradition but future-facing by design, Wrekin has spent over 140 years following the Wrekin way and helping pupils grow in confidence, character, and ambition.
