About Wrekin Prep
LOVE THE JOURNEY
The greatest gift...
a Wrekin Prep education
Established in 1845, Wrekin Prep is an independent, co-educational day school for children aged 4-11 (Reception to Year 6). We are proud of our history and are well known for our exceptional all-round education both in the classroom and beyond. We offer a challenging and stimulating environment where every child is known as an individual and is well supported to fulfil their full potential. High standards of academic achievement are realised within a broad and balanced curriculum which embraces creativity, the arts and sport.
We offer an exceptional education in our state-of-the-art, purpose-built prep school which includes a hall with theatre-style seating, a music and drama studio, an innovation lab, a significant number of sports pitches, a beautiful art room, a science lab, a library and an ICT suite. We are fortunate to be part of Wrekin College with which we share many facilities including a 25m indoor swimming pool, sports halls, two artificial playing surfaces and a Chapel.
Our Ethos
The aim of Wrekin Prep is to provide an excellent all-round education and a broad and balanced curriculum for children aged 4-11. We work hard to ensure that every child at Wrekin Prep experiences an outstanding educational journey, where they will develop character, intellect, physical and emotional wellbeing and cultural understanding within a supportive environment. The School aims to cultivate an ethos in which each pupil is cared for individually, valued equally and where they are enabled to achieve their full potential both in and beyond the classroom.
Our Aims
We seek to do this across all areas of school life by committing as a community to:
- Providing challenge
- Encouraging a love of learning
- Developing confidence
- Offering opportunity
- Entrusting responsibility
- Building transferable skills
- Cultivating wellbeing
We aim to foster a positive relationship with parents, a child’s first and foremost educators, who we view very much as partners in the educational journey. We welcome dialogue and discussion to ensure the very best outcomes for all of the children in our care.
History
Foundations in the past to ensure strength in the future.
Founded in 1845, Wrekin Prep is the oldest prep school in Shropshire, although you wouldn't realise this looking at the modern, purpose-built facilities we have today. For over 160 years, Wrekin Prep, known then as The Old Hall School, was housed in Wellington's oldest building, with its striking black and white timbered walls, earning a significant place in Shropshire's history.

ISI Report 2023
Excellent in all areas - ISI report 2023
We are delighted that in our most recent ISI inspection report, Wrekin Prep was rated as EXCELLENT in all areas. This is a true testament to every pupil, parent and staff member who is part of the Wrekin Prep family, and reflects what all members of Wrekin Prep already know; that this is an excellent school which offers children a first-rate education, both academically and pastorally.
The first part of the report is the Focused Compliance Inspection which reports on the school’s compliance with the regulation standards with a judgement of ‘met’ or ‘not met’; we met all the necessary standards required. The second part of the report is the Educational Quality Inspection which reports on the quality of the school’s work focusing on the two key outcomes of achievement of pupils, including academic development, and the personal development of pupils. These judgements are either ‘excellent’, ‘good’, ‘sound’ or ‘unsatisfactory’. We are exceptionally pleased to report that Wrekin Prep was rated ‘excellent’ in all areas.
The report refers to Wrekin Prep by its previous name of Old Hall School.
