Academic Lecture Series - Lent Term
The Lent Term Academic Lecture Series began with a thought-provoking lecture delivered by Head of School, Liv, entitled “Animal Welfare in Modern Farming: Are We Doing Enough?”. The lecture explored modern farming practices, animal welfare, and the ethical and sustainability challenges associated with large-scale food production, encouraging pupils to reflect critically on contemporary global issues.

We were also delighted to welcome back Old Wrekinian Mr Richard Forrest, who delivered an engaging lecture on the “Electronics Revolution”. Drawing on his experience as an electrical engineer, Mr Forrest shared insights into the rapid development of electronic technologies and their impact on modern life. Wrekin is grateful for the continued involvement of its Old Wrekinians and looks forward to welcoming more back throughout the year.
The series also included a lecture delivered by Patrick Bayle, a cybersecurity consultant, entitled “Cybersecurity: The Coolest Job You’ve Never Heard Of?”. The session introduced pupils to the increasingly important field of cybersecurity, highlighting real-world applications, emerging challenges, and potential career pathways within the sector.
In “Oscar Wilde – Wilde Delights, Queering the Novel”, delivered by Mr Jennings, Teacher of English and Drama, pupils were encouraged to examine Wilde’s writing with fresh perspectives. The session brought about reflection on themes of identity, culture, and society, providing a deeper appreciation of Wilde’s literary contributions.
In the penultimate lecture of the series for the Lent term, GCSE pupil Lois led a session entitled “What Do You See? Rorschach Inkblot Tests”, which explored perception and interpretation. Pupils were invited to consider how individuals process ambiguous information and reflect on the subjective nature of perception.
