Academic Lectures

The second half of term has been full of interesting speakers for our weekly lunchtime lectures.

Firstly, West Midlands-based artist, Shannon Ward gave a talk about her journey to becoming a professional artist, how she got there, and her ambitions for the future.

Fifth Form pupil, Matthew gave a lecture 'Sketching Someone' about building characters. He talked about the considerations needed when creating characters, an apt topic on World Book Day.

We welcomed Old Wrekinian, Kate Parkyn, to deliver a fascinating academic lecture on the role of artificial intelligence in science. Kate is the Talent Director at Isomorphic Labs, a digital biology company at the cutting edge of redefining drug discovery using the power of artificial intelligence. Kate's lecture provided great inspiration to our budding scientists and medics who were keen to find out more about the potential of AI to advance scientific understanding.

Amelia, a GCSE History student in our Fourth Form, gave a fascinating talk on the local historic market town of Madeley and its many interesting links to major historical events, such as Charles II's escape to the continent after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester and the development of Methodism in England through the work of the Rev. John Fletcher, a former resident of the town.

Our final Academic Lecture of the term was given by Kate McMahon, who delivered a talk entitled: ‘Drop, Cover, Hold: The 2011 Christchurch Earthquake’. It was an interesting and engaging lecture to hear about her first hand experience of the event.
