A Year of Sporting Success at Wrekin
As another outstanding sporting year draws to a close, we are celebrating the remarkable achievements of our pupils across a wide range of sports. From national finals and championship titles to international representation and individual honours, this has been one of Wrekin's most successful years on the sports field.
Rugby
Senior rugby enjoyed an excellent season, including impressive victories over Hereford and KES Aston before embarking on the Italy Rugby Tour. The Under 16s were crowned County Champions, earning Team of the Year honours. Individual success also continued, with Henry completing two years with Coventry Academy, Barney and Joe representing Coventry Academy Under 17s, and Jensen and Ed retained by Gloucester Rugby.
Several pupils represented Shropshire during the season, while Old Wrekinians Charlie Pugh (England Counties Under 20) and George Perkins (North Midlands Senior Men's County Championship winners at Twickenham) also celebrated significant achievements.
Girls Hockey
The 1st XI enjoyed an impressive season, winning six matches, drawing three and losing just twice, while finishing third in the County Cup.
The Under 16s were crowned Shropshire Champions before narrowly missing out in the Midlands Finals. The Under 15s also enjoyed another successful campaign, while the Under 14s finished runners-up in the county competition before claiming third place in the Midlands Finals.
Boys Hockey
This has been one of the most successful boys hockey seasons in Wrekin history.
The 1st XI won all seven of their fixtures and finished fifth in the Midlands Finals. The Under 15s won six matches, drew one and lost just once. The Under 14s became Shropshire Champions before being crowned Midlands Champions and progressing to the Tier 2 National Finals, where they finished eighth.
The Under 16s made history by winning the County Cup, becoming Midlands Champions and then being crowned National Vase Champions. A special tribute goes to departing 1st XI captain Moritz, who scored an incredible 87 goals across his final two seasons at Wrekin.
Athletics
Athletes enjoyed success throughout the year at the Telford Schools Championships, Shropshire Cup and the prestigious Mason Trophy. Barnaby and Mya have both qualified for the English Schools Finals, while Barnaby is currently ranked seventh in the UK for the Under 20 100m and has earned qualification for the British Championships.
Football
The Senior Football team enjoyed a memorable campaign, winning their league and earning promotion to the First Division after losing just one match all season. They also reached the third round of the National Cup.
Cricket
Cricket has continued to thrive across the school, with strong performances against quality opposition.
The Under 14s have shown excellent potential throughout the season, while the Under 15s produced a number of competitive performances. A special mention goes to Fin, whose consistent excellence earned him regular appearances for the 1st XI. Under the captaincy of Daxon, the 1st XI enjoyed several impressive victories, including an outstanding win over QMGS Walsall. Fin has continued his outstanding form for school, club and Worcestershire, while Rebecca made a memorable debut for the Girls 1st XI, taking six wickets against WGS. Girls cricket has continued to go from strength to strength, with growing participation and several excellent performances throughout the season.
Swimming
Our swimmers enjoyed another exceptional season.
Maisie qualified for the Scottish Home Nationals in five events, finished in the top eight at the West Midlands Championships and was crowned overall champion at the Shropshire County Championships. Charlie claimed bronze in the 400m Freestyle at the West Midlands Championships, won his age group at the Shropshire Counties and was awarded the Top Overall Boys Trophy at the Shropshire Schools Championships.
Beth finished in the top eight in three West Midlands events before winning the Top Overall Girls Trophy at the Shropshire Schools Championships.
Sam qualified for multiple West Midlands Championship events and finished runner-up overall at the Shropshire Counties, while Finley secured a top-eight regional finish and won two gold medals at the Shropshire Schools Championships.
Motor Racing
Torrin enjoyed an exceptional year on the track, claiming his maiden podium in the GB4 Championship and finishing as Ginetta Junior Winter Series Vice Champion.
Gymnastics
Hetty achieved the incredible honour of being selected as part of the Australian training squad for the Commonwealth Games.
Fencing
Wrekin's fencers enjoyed another successful season, travelling to the Public Schools Fencing Competition in London, where Tom was the standout performer.
Fives
Fives continues to grow in popularity at Wrekin. Lancaster House claimed the girls House title, while Bayley House were victorious in the boys competition.
Nationally, Wrekin fielded Under 13 and Under 14 teams at the National Championships. The Under 14s recorded impressive victories over Eton College pairings, while the Under 13s won the Plate Competition at the qualifying tournament. We look forward to extending opportunities to Wrekin Prep pupils next year as the sport continues to flourish.
