End of Term CAT Report
Another busy term concluded with the senior CCF members visiting RAF Shawbury on Field Day to conduct live firing with the L98 rifles. All firers displayed high levels of skill and passed their 2 star range qualification, firing 200 rounds each during the day.
The Third form travelled to Caer Caradoc in the Shropshire Hills to complete their Bronze D of E day walk. The day consisted of navigation training on a 12 – 14 km route around and over the hills to the East of Church Stretton. On a gloriously sunny day and with little wind all performed well and there were many demonstrations of good navigational and team skills. Well done to the Third form.
The junior Army and RAF cadets have continued with their basic DofE skills combined with weapon training and basic fieldcraft. The senior RAF cadets have been focused on a joint competition with Shrewsbury School CCF which took place last Thursday. They performed in all tasks to a very high standard, ending up as winners in several categories and with individual commendations.
Congratulations must go Millie (ME) who has been promoted to Cadet Warrant Officer, the senior rank that a cadet can achieve in the CCF, and has now concluded her year as a Lord Lieutenant’s Cadet. We would like to thank all the staff who have helped out with CCF activities this term, several of whom are not usually part of CCF but have given their time willingly.
This term has seen the senior cohorts in the DofE scheme complete several of their sections towards their awards with several members of the Upper Sixth achieving their Gold awards this term. The Lower Sixth Gold cohort have undertaken a day’s training to refresh their Bronze skills and a training weekend to hone those skills on the hills around Stiperstones in the Shropshire Hills. The standard of campcraft and map reading was very good and bodes well for their practice expedition in June in the Berwyn mountains in North Wales.
The Fourth Form have completed their Bronze training and are now ready to put their skills to practical use next term on their practice expeditions around Llangollen in North Wales. The Lent term is traditionally a quiet one for expeditions but we are all looking forward to Bronze and Gold expeditions next term. A big thanks you to all the D of E staff, and those who volunteer to help, for giving up their weekends to support the awards.
