End of Term Sports Report
The diversity of Wrekin Sport has been well documented this term; with success and mass participation to savour…
Netball
In Netball, there have been many highlights. The Under 19s, Under 16s and Under 14s have all qualified for the West Midlands Finals in January. Our Under 19 team are through to the National Cup Quarter Final after three tough rounds against RGS Worcester, Solihull and Rugby School. The Under 16s have reached the National Bowl Semi Finals, and the Under 13s, the quarter finals. Many girls have begun their journey for both County and Super-league Franchises, and the U19 National Performance League. Millie and Caitlin continue to train for both the England Roses and Ireland squads.
Jiu-Jitsu
Sydney won the British Jiu-jitsu Open beating a girl 12kg heavier. Syd was down on points but made an epic comeback winning by submission in the last 4 seconds of the fight.
Table Tennis
In the eagerly anticipated House Table Tennis Competition over 20 pupils represented their Houses. The winners of the boys' competition was Bayley and the Girls', Clarkson.Athletics
Barnaby ran 6:92 in the 60m Championships last weekend. This was half-a-second off the World Record!
Golf
The school had an excellent win against Repton, but unfortunately bowed out in the second round of the ISGA golf competition to Ellesmere.Gymnastics
Mabelle competed in the British team championships who won the team gold medal. Mabelle has recently officially signed on a D1 full athletic scholarship to Long Island University in America for gymnastics.
Football
This term has been an exciting and action-packed one for football at Wrekin, with students across all age groups showcasing their talent, determination, and teamwork. The Under 16 squad has had a particularly impressive run, securing a place in the last 32 of the national cup. This is a tremendous achievement. As they prepare for the next round in the new year, we wish them every success. This term’s football has not only been about results but also about fostering a love for the game, building teamwork, and developing individual talent. Good Luck to Arran who is representing the England Independent schools Team next week at St. George’s Park. House matches were won by YORK.
Rowing
Two House events took place recently, the Grand Prix Challenge and the Inter-House Mile. In the first event, the winners were 1st George, 2nd Harry & 3rd Archie and in the Girls 1st Kirsty, 2nd Ella & 3rd Esther. And in the Inter-House Mile; Kirsty, Esther & Shaunte and the Boys, George, Will & Jake. House Winners were Roslyn & York.
Badminton
It has been a packed term for badminton, with matches for the Under 18s, Under 16s and Under 14s, as well as our new Shropshire League team and of course the House Badminton competition. Under 18s had tough fixtures with Shrewsbury & Ellesmere; but began to turn things around in a second fixture with Ellesmere that ended in an 11-12 loss. The Under 16s and Under 14s had excellent victories against Burton Borough and Ercall Wood. The Shropshire League team have faced tough and experienced opposition. Taking one set in the match against Telford recently was a step in the right direction.
House Badminton - In the boys competition, York won, winning five of their matches. In the girls' competition Roslyn were winners.
Basketball and Volleyball
In House Basketball & Volleyball an exciting competition last week saw Tudor claiming victory in the Basketball competition. In a very enthusiastic and entertaining House Volleyball tournament, the winners were Bayley and Roslyn.
Swimming
Our swimmers have been busy this term competing at various competitions to gain county qualifying times for the 2025 Shropshire County Championships next term. Sam and Esmay have attended West Midlands training camps, with Beth attending National training camps. In House relays both the Girls and Boys events could not be separated on points; with Roslyn and Clarkson sharing the win with 12 points each. And in the boys event, also on a tie with 15 points each, were York & Tudor.
Rugby
An impressive and busy term for the Wrekin Rugby Squads. The 1st team will feel they could have, and should have, progressed further on the National stage. Opportunities existed, but lessons learned. Again, this was the case in local derbies where schoolboy errors affected results. At the tail-end of the season, key wins against Hereford Cathedral School and King Henry VIII were well deserved; and sets the tone for how we will play into next term.
The 15s were one game away from winning their National Plate page. Heavily affected by knocks and injuries, they have mustered well all season. Consistency and structure has still to develop in their game play. They have won the games they should have won, and more importantly, were dominant in the inaugural County 10-a-side tournament and enjoyed winning some silverware.
The 16s, for the first time, were offered an outing at this level on the national stage too, but exited early through a tough draw. Beyond that, they have had a bespoke fixture list playing new opponents like Kings Gloucester or playing School second teams, Malvern and Adams. These tests have been thorough and mostly affected squad depth. Up to seven of the squad have played at 1st team level this year, a real sign of encouragement, as well as testing leadership skills.
The Under 14s assembled a big playing squad, playing on larger pitches with a full 15. Skill levels have been tested and defence improvement is high on the Christmas wish list. Their willingness to take on new skills and be creative has been a joy to watch, as is their attacking play. Playing a new fixture list has seen dominant wins at KES Aston and St Joseph's, with important early season cup wins too. The New Gloucester DPP at U16s and U15s is in its infancy but we are well represented. Henry is on the verge of being involved in the Coventry Academy. Dom has played North Midlands this year and has been nominated for the English Schools Lambs. In the House matches – the winners of both competitions were Tudor.
Hockey
There have been lots of highlights throughout the season, from big wins and tournament champions, and girls in younger years making their debut for the older teams. The Under 16s and Under 14s came through tough county rounds to qualify for the Midlands finals, with the U14s crowned county champions. The Under 18 team sadly missed out on Midlands, but were credited with defensive masterclasses against Ellesmere and Shrewsbury, with Shaunte being credited by oppositioncoaches.
The Under 16s made the semis at the Midlands finals. The Under 14s were unfortunate to miss out on place in the semi-finals, after winning 3 of their 5 group stage games. All teams have had some great results throughout the season over some very tough opponents, but the following results showed the Wrekin girls at their best. The Under 14s comfortable 6-1 win over Moreton Hall, the Under 15s beating Kings Worcester 2-1, the Under 18s holding Denstone College to a 1-1 draw and finally the Under 14s beating NULS 3-0 away. Three girls made their senior debuts for the Under 18 1st and 2nd XIs. These girls have trained incredibly hard with the right attitude on the hockey pitch throughout the season. Well done to Annabell in Fourth form for stepping up to the 2nd XI, Martha in Fourth Form for the 1st XI and finally Niamh in Third Form debuting for the 1st XI in their final match of the season. Well done!
In Boys' hockey, the Saturday league team has put down a big statement to the league by playing 7 matches and winning all 7 so far this season. They have scored 30 goals and conceded 5 with Moritz scoring 12 goals so far. The boys continue after Christmas with the hope of securing promotion at the end of the season in April. A big well done to all involved in hockey this year and thank you to the hockeystaff for facilitating all the fixtures and training sessions we have had. In the House matches, the overall winners were Clarkson.
The sports team would like to thank all the Coaching Staff, Groundsmen, Catering and Marketing for their continued support throughout the term. Without this, our Games Programme here at Wrekin would not be so successful.
