End of Term Sports Report
“In Wrekin Sport, success isn’t always about greatness, it’s about consistency….”
This term, we have competed in many sports and here is an overview of the varied successes we continue to achieve.
Rugby
Rugby this term has focused on Sevens festivals and County competitions. While the Senior 7 have performed well at the Wirral, Shrewsbury and Wrekin festivals, they had a tough experience at Rosslyn Park. The Under 16s won the County Sevens tournament, and we wish them well in their County XVs Cup final, after a "nearly experience" at Rosslyn Park.
The Under 15s also won the County Sevens Festival but lost on Tuesday in their XVs season, having nearly picked up a third piece of silverware this year, having won the 10-a-side version in September. The Under 14s have made huge improvements across the season but find XV a side an easier shift than the 7s game. Their progression to the County Final has been faultless – we wish them well. At Lancaster level, Second Form progressed to a county cup final, and First Form continue to battle. The intensity they have adopted in their play was evident in the House Rugby and a good number of players are now playing club rugby.
Esmée has been nominated to join the Staffordshire Under 18s County team for next season as well as being invited to the Centre of Excellence, a wonderful achievement. Barney continues into the next level of the Gloucester Academy development pathway while Hugo has been selected by Coventry to enter their Under 15 pathway. Henry has swapped Worcester for Coventry and is playing Sale Sharks Under 17s this week having already played Exeter Chiefs and Ealing Trail finders. Ollie and Tadhg represented Shropshire at Under 15s.
After a closely fought Lancaster House Rugby contest, one of the most enjoyable events in years, Attingham prevailed.
Hockey
All the teams have produced some fine results, whether that was in friendly fixtures, county cups or Midlands finals. Every age group for boys' hockey qualified for their respective Midlands finals and gave a great account of themselves at Midlands, the most notable highlights being the Under 14s reaching the final, the Under 16s reaching the semi-finals and the Under 18s picking up some great results and improving on previous years.
In recent weeks, the Under 14, Under 16 and Under 18 boys all became county champions. The staff and boys' hockey team have gone unbeaten this season and have won their league title, gaining promotion for next year.
There has been some standout individual success out of school with Herbie and Noah playing in the National Conference league with their Clubs, and many other boys getting selected for talent academies.
Finally, the winner of the house Hockey competition is Bayley!
Netball
Success at County level saw the 1sts, Under 16s and Under 14s compete at the West Midlands Finals, where the 1sts became Regional Champions and National Finalists, finishing top 10 in the country. The Under 16s recently won Bronze at the National Bowl Finals. The Under 13s became County Champions.
Many players are representing the school in National League competitions and Millie JC was selected for England and Caitlin for Ireland. A number of girls from Year 7 to Upper 6 are playing franchise netball for Birmingham Panthers, Nottingham Forest and Loughborough Lightening.
House champions are Clarkson and the winning Lancaster Quarter (on goal difference), was Boscobel.
Wrekin College have also been awarded a magnificent shield on behalf of Shropshire Schools Netball in recognition of Wrekin dominating schools netball this year winning Under 12, Under 13, Under 14, Under 16 and Under 19 titles in one season!
Football
The First XI Football team had an excellent season with some strong performances throughout. Most noticeably, a win against Ellesmere College and home and away wins against Haberdasher Adams.
The Fifth Form football team showed tremendous spirit and determination this season, though they were unfortunate to be knocked out of the National Cup at the quarter-final stage. While this may not have been the ending they hoped for, their journey as a squad has been nothing short of exceptional. From winning the District Cup in 2022 to reaching the National Cup semi-finals in 2023, and now the quarter-finals in 2025, their achievements speak for themselves. Their commitment, teamwork, and resilience have made them a formidable force on the pitch, and I have no doubt that the experiences and memories they have created together will stay with them for a lifetime. It has been an absolute privilege to coach this team throughout their time at Wrekin, Mr Lintern could not be prouder of everything they have accomplished.
Volleyball
Volleyball has gone from strength to strength this year with a clear improvement in individual skills and teamwork. The season has featured many fixtures and great results, consistently beating Oswestry and Ellesmere, and some outstanding and closely fought matches against Concorde. All that, combined with the enthusiasm, enjoyment and togetherness of the team, has made it an excellent season.
Fencing
In Fencing Wrekin hosted a four teams match involving Shrewsbury and Rugby schools who joined the local club Wrekin Sword to meet the Wrekin College squad. 45 fencers across three weapons engaged in this major home fixture, resulting in some impressive wins for us.
Wrekin fielded a three weapons squad over three days at the Public Schools' Fencing Championships for the third year in a row. This resulted in some impressive rankings for our fencers, several of whom achieved top twenty positions in this national event. We commend the valiant efforts of Martin, Ashley, Nick, Seth, Malek, Lottie, Jasmine, Tom, Toby, Alex, and William who took part in this year's event.
Rowing
In Rowing, the Lent Term Challenge was won by…
Girls: 1st Kirsty, 2nd Ella and 3rd Esther.
Boys: 1st Rocco, 2nd Ethan and 3rd Charlie.
Badminton
In Badminton this term highlights included our Under 14 and Under 16 boys teams reaching the semi-finals of the Telford and Wrekin schools competition, and our Shropshire County Badminton Association League squad continuing to show a huge commitment to representing the school and the sport playing matches late into the evening against players who have often been playing far longer than our team have been alive!
