End of Term Sports Round-up

It has been an incredibly busy second half of term for sport, and there have been lots of achievements across a wide range of sports!

Hockey

Girls: There have been plenty of hockey fixtures for all age groups during this half of term. The U12s have found their feet in their first term of hockey at Wrekin, lodging big wins over Oswestry, Birchfield andWolverhampton Grammar School. The U13s also took convincing wins over these schools, the highlight of the season for them was an impressive win over King’s School Worcester.

The season started off a little slow for the U14s, but when they found their stride they managed to win their first ever tournament at the Shropshire County Finals, coming away as winners of the Shropshire Plate competition! The U15s began their season with a win against Moreton Hall, before a three-game losing streak, followed by four wins and the team beginning to play some very good hockey. Over half the squad represented the school in the U16s County Tournament, where the team came away as runners-up and qualified for the Midlands Finals.

Early in the season, the U18s qualified for the Midlands Finals with an excellent performance in the Shropshire round, despite having key players injured. The team built up momentum heading into thefinals with good wins over Denstone, Shrewsbury and Ellesmere. At the finals the girls finished runners-up, with Saffron named as player of the tournament.

Boys: The boys entered the England Hockey League this season and have been playing against some seriously talented hockey clubs. A mix of results mean they find themselves sitting mid-table. The highlight so far was a 3-0 win away at Leek. The team is beginning to peak, ahead of the school fixtures next term and we wish them good luck.

The individual highlight for boys' hockey this term has to be Herbie being selected for the U16 England hockey squad, which is a huge achievement!

Rugby

Before this half of term began, there was a senior rugby trip to Lisbon, Portugal during half term. The trip saw some outstanding rugby being played in the Portuguese sun!

If SOCS is to be believed, a 70% win rate this season is a fine reflection of the efforts of the boys and staff both on and off the Rugby pitch. The 1st XV and U15s matched each other’s efforts in reaching the 4th round in their respective National Vase competitions, the seniors clearly meeting their match in St Ambrose and the U15s feeling that they could have gone further. Wins over Loughborough Grammar, Shrewsbury, and NULS set the seniors up for an impressive cup run, and season. They now roll over to the 7s season and look forward to the new County 7s and Rossyln Park in March.

The Under 15s travelled further on their cup run to South Bromsgrove, Oswestry and then a win against Sandbach, in a season that also included a 75 point win over Malvern! The U16s contributed nine players to the successful touring squad that travelled to Portugal, with two extra wins to the cause. Their individual season has been a test of the next level, with tough early season outings. However, on balance, their targets of overcoming local Haberdasher rivals led to two well-deserved late season wins that balanced their term. They are set for the county cup next term to establish their future 1st XV credentials.

And finally, the U14s have made massive steps. Impressive wins at St Joseph's and Church Stretton have then led to an emotional win over Adams, to complete a local clean sweep. Against other established opponents, they have lost close games.

The Midlands West DPP currently has Tadhg and Alfie training at U14s, Barney, George, Joe, Greg and Toby at U15s, and Henry at U16s. Elliot, Toby and Harry are contending for the English Lambs, and Elliot, Harry and Ned are training with the North Mids.

Netball

Wrekin Netball teams continue to have success in multiple age groups. The Lancaster netball teams have been out in force, gaining winning results against local rivals Shrewsbury High School. This week the U14 team beat King’s High Warwick, taking them through to the last 16 of the National Bowl Competition.

The U19 team have been unstoppable this term! A string of wins means that they continue to progress in the National Cup, despite having to dig deep in some closely fought contests.

The U19s, U16s and U14s have all qualified for the West Midlands Finals in January. The U19s won every match in the County Tournament on their route to becoming County Champions once again!

Football

A fantastic term for football at Wrekin has seen the boys' U13s, U15s and U16 squads progress to the latter stages of the District and National Cup Competitions. Lancaster boys have had a successful term, with some notable results, including all squads going unbeaten against Repton.

Lancaster Girls competed well in their fixture against Prestfelde, whilst the senior girls team also did Wrekin proud in their fixture against Telford College. The senior boys' football team have also recorded good results against Concorde and RGS Worcester. The senior House football competition ended in victory for York!

A special mention should go to Simba for his debut for Shrewsbury Town, he is the youngest ever player in the history of the football club. What an achievement!

Basketball

Following on from a successful term for the school's Basketball team, the House Matches were won by Tudor and Clarkson respectively.

Badminton

Our mixed badminton squads have had some great fixtures this season with matches against schools including Moreton Hall, Burton Borough and Oswestry.

The House Badminton was hotly contested, with a mixture of doubles and singles matches played in both boys' and girls' competitions and 30 students took part. The winners of the boys' competition was York House. In the girls' competition, Clarkson tried their best to defend Roslyn's attacks, but Roslyn were the winners with a clean sheet with eight out of eight matches.

Golf

The school team progressed to the final round of the ISGA National Cup, they now face Worksop in the New Year. Well done to our Golfers Zach, Izzy and Jack!

Swimming

The swimmers have been busy competing at several open meet competitions and time trials since September, aiming to reach county qualifying times before the County Championships start in January. In the British Inter County Championships, Beth, Sam and Charlie were all chosen to represent Shropshire at the British Inter County gala in Sheffield. In the West Midland Short Course Championships, Beth was the only school swimmer to qualify for the Championships; where she came 4th in the 200FC final. The House Relays were won by Tudor & Roslyn.

Rowing

This term in rowing the students have been participating in a Grand Prix. In the girls' competition, Lulu came first, Hattie second and Grace third. In the boys' competition, first place Archie, second Maxiand Jake came third.

Volleyball

Volleyball has really taken off this term with more students than ever playing recreationally, and representing the school. The game against TCAT earlier this term was another five-set thriller withWrekin narrowly losing out.  With fixtures against Oswestry, TCAT and Telford Volleyball Club to look forward to, the future is bright!

We have had some incredible results across a plethora of sports this term, but perhaps more importantly our pupils have shown great teamwork, resilience and spirit in fixtures, competitions and games sessions!
