Geography Students Explore the Wonders of the Azores

Volcanoes, hot springs, tea plantations, and lava tunnels create an unforgettable learning adventure

Our Geography students embarked on an extraordinary journey to the breathtaking Azores, immersing themselves in one of the world’s most remarkable volcanic landscapes. The trip began in Furnas, where students bathed in the region’s famous iron-rich hot springs and enjoyed a traditional Azorean lunch slow-cooked underground using natural geothermal heat; an experience that perfectly showcased the islands’ powerful volcanic energy.

Their explorations continued with visits to bubbling fumarolic fields and a guided tour of Europe’s oldest tea plantation, where they learned how the unique island climate shapes the cultivation and production of Azorean tea. The group also travelled to the Caldeiras de Ribeira Grande hot springs on the slopes of the Água de Pau Massif volcano, gaining first-hand insight into the geothermal forces that define the region.

To round off their adventure, pupils ventured deep underground into the island’s longest lava tunnel, witnessing the dramatic formations left behind by ancient eruptions. The journey offered not only unparalleled geographical learning but also an unforgettable sense of discovery that brought their studies vividly to life.
