Honouring Tom’s Story: Raising Awareness of Mental Health and Addiction

Henry Maybury and his mum Sally visited Wrekin on Friday to talk to our older pupils about Tom, their much-loved brother and son who lost his life to alcohol addiction aged just 29. Henry and Sally told the pupils how Tom, an Old Wrekinian, stumbled in life, causing him to suffer with his mental health and eventually using alcohol as a coping mechanism. Their story, told in a sensitive and age-appropriate manner, encouraged anyone listening to be mindful of their mental health and to talk about any struggles they may have.

Henry also played his music and showed his music videos inspired by his brother Tom, to the listening pupils.

The pupils were signposted after the talk to the appropriate resources, and Henry and Sally were also available to talk to.

We are so grateful to Henry and Sally for sharing their story with us in such a sensitive, insightful and poignant way, in a place that held so many memories of Tom.
