Prep Sports Round-Up: A Season of Energy, Skill and Success
It has been an exciting and action-packed period for sport at Wrekin Prep, with pupils across all year groups embracing opportunities to develop their skills, compete, and represent the school with pride. From cricket nets to hockey tournaments and netball success, there has been plenty to celebrate.
Hockey
It has been a hugely successful and busy period for hockey at Wrekin Prep. The boys delivered an incredible afternoon of fixtures against Birchfield, with both the Under 11 and Under 10 teams producing outstanding performances. Strong teamwork, excellent decision-making, and clinical finishing were on display throughout, with all players representing the school with great pride.
At the Under 8 and Under 10 Hockey Festival, three Wrekin Prep teams each played nine matches across the day, demonstrating remarkable energy, resilience, and enthusiasm. It was especially pleasing to see the significant progress made by every pupil, with growing confidence, teamwork, and skill evident in each game.
Meanwhile, the Under 11 girls enjoyed a fantastic experience at the Midlands In2Hockey Finals at Nottingham Hockey Centre, having qualified as Shropshire County champions. Competing against strong opposition, the team showed exceptional determination and resilience, conceding just four goals across the entire tournament. Their teamwork and spirit were a credit to the school, supported brilliantly by staff and parents alike.
Netball
Netball has also been a major highlight, with Year 6 pupils enjoying a fantastic afternoon of mixed netball. The matches were full of energy, teamwork, and sportsmanship, with pupils supporting one another, trying new positions, and embracing friendly competition.
Building on this enthusiasm, the Under 11 team achieved outstanding success at the Telford and Wrekin Year 5/6 tournament, where they were crowned champions. Inspired by the success of the senior team, they delivered an exceptional performance, conceding just two goals throughout the entire tournament. This victory secures their place at the Shropshire School Games later this term.
Football, Netball and Multi-Sport Events
It was also a pleasure to welcome Year 2 parents to Wrekin Prep for a ‘Taste of Sport’ event. Pupils took part in a range of activities including a fun version of Gladiators Powerball, small-sided football, netball matches, and hockey skills sessions. The event provided a wonderful opportunity for parents to see sport in action at the Prep and to learn more about how opportunities develop from Year 3 onwards. The afternoon concluded with refreshments and informal discussions, celebrating the pupils’ enthusiasm and engagement.
Cricket
Cricket sessions are well underway at Wrekin Prep, making full use of the excellent facilities in the double sports hall at Wrekin College. Year 6 pupils have been getting padded up and working hard in the nets, developing their confidence and technique with hard ball cricket. Meanwhile, Year 3 pupils have been focusing on their batting skills, building strong foundations for the future. It is fantastic to see cricket thriving across the Prep.
Across all sports, it has been wonderful to see such enthusiasm, commitment, and enjoyment from every pupil. We look forward to another exciting term of sport at Wrekin Prep.
