Wrekin Sport: A Week of Grit, Growth, and Triumphs
Last week, Wrekin students enjoyed a busy and successful week of sport, with notable achievements at county and national levels across a variety of disciplines.
Volleyball
The volleyball team faced a tough first fixture of the season against a very strong Concorde side. Despite the challenge, Wrekin displayed fantastic team spirit and some excellent play, leaving plenty to build on for future matches.
Netball
The 1st team kicked off the Netball National Cup with a thrilling first-round victory over RGS Worcester. A tightly contested first half saw the score level at 19-all, but strong defensive work and clinical attacking in the last two quarters led to a convincing 36-23 win.
Rugby
The 1st XV completed the KES Aston block with a comprehensive 61-12 win, highlighted by a hat-trick from Barney.
Over the weekend, the U14s put in a strong defensive display against Malvern, with Alfie scoring the try of the game after an excellent team move. The U14b team also impressed, securing a 37-28 win with several newcomers shining.
While the 1st XV narrowly lost 28-12, the resilience and grit shown across all age groups were highly commendable, especially given the challenges of injuries and match fitness.
Girls’ Hockey
The 1st XI drew 1-1 with Denstone College, with special congratulations to Third Former Sandra, who became the youngest ever goal scorer for the 1st XI.
The U13A, U13B, and U12A sides faced strong Denstone opposition and narrowly missed out, while the U12B continued their unbeaten run with a hard-fought 1-1 draw. The Wrekin staff and student club team also drew 3-3 against Market Drayton in a pre-season fixture.
The highlight of the week came from the U16 girls, who competed in the county cup with outstanding success. Victories over Shrewsbury High (5-0), Ellesmere College (7-0), Shrewsbury School (3-1), and Moreton Hall (7-0) crowned them county champions. The team now progresses to the Midlands finals – congratulations to all!
