Sports Report
Hockey
It has been a huge week in Hockey with tournaments and regular fixtures all taking place. On Wednesday the Boys Under 15s won 3-1 and the Boys Under 14s won 7-0, both against Shrewsbury. The Boys Under 16s took on Denstone and lost 2-0. On Saturday the Boys Under 18s put on a stellar performance in a 3-3 draw against Newport Hockey Club.
First up at the Midlands Finals was the Boys Under 14s on Monday. They topped their group, which put them in the final, where they lost against Nottingham. Getting a Silver medal at this level is a remarkable achievement, and up to this moment represented the furthest that any boys hockey team in Wrekin History. It was the Boys Under 18s turn on Wednesday and they gave a solid account of themselves against tough opposition.
Finally, on Friday it was the turn of the Boys Under 16s. After a draw against Queen Marys in the group stage, Wrekin needed to score six to overcome the goal difference deficit and make the final. Up stepped Herbie who shredded the opponents defence to score all six goals. In the final Wrekin beat Newcastle in a shootout, thanks to heroics from goalkeeper Matt to become Midlands Champions. In doing so, they became the first Boys team in Wrekin history to reach the National Finals, an incredible achievement.
Rugby
A week of Rugby 7s Festivals saw the Under 15s go undefeated at Shrewsbury School, for the Under 14s this was a learning opportunity, and they coped really well in their first outing in this format. The U16s got to the final of the Wrekin 7s, but unfortunately lost to St Jo's, Stoke. The 1st 7s know that their attack works, but better connectivity is needed in defence prior to Rosslyn Park.
The Under 13s travelled to Terra Nova and came a very respectful 3rd place when playing against very competitive schools such as Kirkham, Stoneyhurst and Manchester Grammar.
Netball
The 1st team had a strongly contested game against Solihull School. They lead throughout the game, but just lost out in the final quarter.
In other news, Sydney represented Shropshire in the Regional Sports Hall Competition and won three Golds for the county. The competition had the best runners from Warwickshire, Hereford and Worcestershire, and Shropshire and Birmingham, she came 2nd overall in Under 15 Girls category, and she won events in vertical jump and eight lap, coming a close 2nd in four lap. The competition brings her indoor season to an end for this year.
