Sports Report

The school certainly showed their diversity by competing in a number of sports last week.

Swimming

The West Midland Swimming Championships was held over two weekends at the Commonwealth 50m pool in Sandwell. Wrekin pupils were swimming against top clubs from City of Birmingham and City of Coventry. A top eight place is a fantastic achievement, but then to win a medal is an outstanding result.

Lancaster pupil, Esmay was: 1st in 800/1500FC and 100Fly, 2nd in 200/400IM and 400FC and 3rd in 50/200FC, and she achieved five other top eight finishes.

Beth was: 1st in 50/100FC, 2nd in 800FC and 3rd in 200/400FC. Sam was 3rd in 1500FC, 5th in 800FC and 200Fly, 6th in 400FC and 7th in 400IM. Charlie came 10th in 800FC and 24th in 400FC, and Sammy was 20th in 50FC.

Cricket

In cricket, the Under 13 and Under 12 girls had excellent matches against Moreton Hall, with the Under 12s winning their match.

The 1st XI Boys had an excellent win in the second round of the National Cup against Ellesmere College. Dax scored 50, and Will and Dan bowled tightly to restrict Ellesmere. Wrekin will now face Rugby School in the quarter final of the Midlands Round.

The 2nd XI Boys had a good game against king's Chester, although they lost out. Ollie batted well for 30 and Will took two wickets in two balls. The Under 14s had a close game against QMGS Walsall, narrowly losing out.

On Saturday, eight teams and over 100 Wrekinians were in action against The King's School Chester:  The Under 15s had a close encounter but fell 30 runs short. The Under 15B team saw an impressive bowling performance by Josh with figures of six wickets for twelve runs after his four over spell.  In the 1st XI Boys match, Wrekin chased down the 91 total in 18 overs. Ciaran had an important 22 runs, while Sam, Oliver and Will brought home the win with a couple of crucial runs at the end, Wrekin won by 2 wickets.

The Under 14As had an excellent win bowling Kings Chester out for 53, and Wrekin chased it down in eight overs. Ollie was pick of the bowlers, taking four wickets for three runs and Sam scored 29 not out. The Under 13As had a brilliant win. Bowling Kings out for 70, Wrekin chased it down in just 13 overs. A terrific team performance.  Unfortunately, the Under 13Bs lost out after bowling well.

The Under 12As lost, however this was not a fair reflection on the game. Oliver scored 49 and in reply Kings Chester were four wickets for just six runs. Everyone who played batted and bowled, well done to all. The Under 12Bs had a learning experience, with some good batting and bowling, Jamie had the shot of the day.

The Under 12 Girls had a well-fought narrow defeat at Chester. The best fielder was Erin, player of the match was Emily with 17 runs and a wicket, there was also a glorious wicket for Heloise.

The performance of the week must go to Sixth Former Will, who got five wickets on his Birmingham Premier League debut for Wolverhampton.

Tennis

The Under 18 Boys traveled away, taking on a very strong Shrewsbury School side. They played some great tennis, and sadly lost out with the exception of Josh and Henry who beat their opposition in a closely fought match.  The Under 15 boys played Shrewsbury School at home, narrowly losing six sets to three overall. A huge congratulations go to our top pair Antoine and Enzo who won all three of their matches!

Football

The Under 13s played Isdall in the semi final of the County Cup. The Boys battled throughout the game but unfortunately fell short in a 3-2 loss. Shout outs must go to Leon for an outstanding performance, and Tom for a speculative 30 yard free kick.

Athletics

A full complement of 4th and 5th Form boys and girls represented the school at the Telford Championships last week. Many of them finished in the top three places.

The Annual Bayley Mile road race was held in Wellington last Wednesday. Wrekin teams competed against other Telford schools.  Archie was runner up in the Open Race, and the Boys Under 13 team held off strong competition from Thomas Telford to win their category, with Charlie winning outright.  In the Under 15 girls race, an outstanding run by Chloe saw the course record beaten soundly. Finn ran a great race to get the silver medal in the Under 15 Boys race.

On Saturday, a number of pupils took part in the Shropshire Three “A”s Athletics championships at Oakengates. Medal winners were as follows:

Abigail: Siver in 100m and Bronze in 300m. Lizzie: Bronze in 200m. Finley: Silver 1500m and Bronze 800m. Charlie: Bronze in Long Jump and Silver in 1500m. Finally, the school would like to award Full Colours to Mia in recognition for her outstanding achievements in Gymnastics for the past seven years in domestic and international competition.  The highlight of this glittering career so far was representing Wales at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham. Mia always shows true Wrekinian grit & determination.
