Sports Report
A packed schedule of matches took place last week.
Fencing
In fencing, Wrekin played Shrewsbury School, achieving a 10 - 6 victory in Sabre - congratulations to the team of Tom, Alex, William, and Leo. In Epee, Club Captain Martin fought valiantly winning every match he played; an impressive achievement as Shrewsbury fielded a top three national fencer and a young Olympain in their Epee team.
Football
The First XI played a well contested game against a strong Shrewsbury School C team, but ultimately came out second best in a 4-2 loss. Then on Saturday, the 1st team lost out to RGS and the 2nd team drew 2-2. There are a lot of positives to take into what will surely be a good season for the squads.
A special mention goes to Arran, for his performance as part of the Under 16 National Independent Schools (ISFA) Football team who were runners up in the annual Specialist Soccer tournament. Arran played some excellent football, scoring a hat-trick in the tournament semi-final against a Californian Touring Side.
Athletics
Lizzie has competed both Nationally and Internationally. Representing England at U20 and Senior level, competing in T38 100m and Long Jump, she achieved PBs in both disciplines. Lizzie also represented England at the UK School Games 2024, held at Loughborough University. Overall she achieved two Bronze, five Silver and five Gold medals.
Badminton
The badminton season got underway with a challenging fixture at Shrewsbury School. A Wrekin squad made up of enthusiastic Sixth Formers played valiantly, demonstrating their resilience in the face of tough opposition. Although we lost out on this occasion, our players showed great potential with special mention going to Millie and Jasmine for gaining the sole Wrekin victory."
Rugby
Under 14 team vs KES Aston won 43-14. It was another great squad performance against a physical team from the ever improving squad, using and applying some new plays and directness. The Under 15s completed a fine win, 55-5. There was a hat trick from Tadgh, and sound individual performances from Elliot, Harry, Alfie and Hugo. The squad continues to grow and a performance like this certainly helps!
The 1st XV progress to the next round of the National Vase with a 54-5 win over Oswestry. Three tries from Henry set the tone, and a technically sharp second half performance was key to securing their place in the next round.
Hockey
On Wednesday the Girls Hockey season started with our Under 14s beating Lucton School 8-0. The Under 13B team competed well, playing some excellent hockey at a prep school tournament at Packwood. In the evening under the floodlights our Under 18s beat a ladies team from Shrewsbury Hockey Club 1-0, with Libby getting the last minute winner.
On Saturday the Under 13A team played in the Moreton Hall prep school tournament against four other schools. The girls played some great hockey remaining undefeated throughout the day and picked up the gold medal for winning the tournament. Well done!
Netball
On Saturday, our Under 16 Girls took on an experienced RGS Worcester 2nd team and produced an excellent squad performance, winning 40-26. Bitsie picked up the opposition's Player of the Match.
Pride of place this week goes to Lower Sixth pupil, Millie. After a tough two day camp last weekend alongside 50 of the top netballers from around the country, Millie has been selected for the England Roses Academy and will begin her journey with exciting prospects of selection for a tour to Australia and the World Youth Cup. Congratulations Millie!
