Sports Report
Last weeks action in Wrekin sport included…
Football
The Under 13Bs played against Packwood and Prestfelde, winning both games without conceding a goal with superb team performances. Goals across the games came from Arthur, Logan and Dougie.
The Under 13Ds also won both games beating Packwood 3-0 and Prestfelde 4-1, goals coming from William, Henry, Adam and four goals over the two games from Alessio. Well done to both teams.
The First XI took on Haberdashers’ Adams in a very close and competitive game. Ultimately, Wrekin came out 2-1 winners with a last minute winner from Brody.
Netball
National Cup - in the 3rd Round, the Under 15s lost out to a strong Edgbaston HighSchool, who are currently ranked 8th in the country.
Volleyball
The team travelled to Ellesmere for a triangular fixture against Ellesmere and Oswestry and emerged victorious, despite not bringing their 'A' game. The following day, they were away at TCAT and showed they had clearly reflected on some of the issues from the previous day and produced some excellent volleyball. Despite that, they were edged out in what was a very close fixture. All in all an impressive start to the season for what is a very new squad.
Hockey
The Under 16 Girls competed in the Midlands Finals in Nottingham. They lost 1-0 against Leicester Grammar. They went on to beat Shipston 3-0 and King Edwards school 1-0 to qualify for the semi-finals. The team played incredibly well but couldn’t progress to the final, as they lost 4-0 to NULS.
The 1st XI were in action at Oswestry school. They lost 3-0 but this score line was not reflective of the match and the girls were very unlucky not to get something out of the game. Our Under 13A and Under 12A also had a fixture against Birchfield school. The Under 13s winning 3-2 and U12s winning 7-0.
On Friday, the Under 14 girls had their Midlands finals at Nottingham. with a 1-0 loss to Leicester Grammar, then proceeded to beat Wellingborough 4-1 and Lichfield 2-0. An excellent result beating Nottingham 2-1, but sadly in their final group gam, they last 2-1 to Princethorpe, missing out on the semi finals by 1 point. Pick of the players was Niamh who scored 7 goals for Wrekin over the course of the day.
On Saturday, we had a block fixture against NULS. The Under 15s lost 4-1, Under 14s won 3-0, the Under 13s lost both of their fixtures and the Under 12s got one win and one loss. Well done ladies for a busy but yet incredible week of hockey!
Finally, the Boys League Team were back in action on Saturday against Wolverhampton hockey club. Despite trailing 2-1 at half time, an inspirational half time team talk meant the boys came out flying in the second half and walked away 4-2 winners! Moritz scored all four goals. The boys are firmly top of the league with 6 wins from 6 matches. Well done all!
Rugby
The Under 14s vs Abraham Darby Lost 17-30. A great start saw the Under 14s take an early lead but Abraham Darby soon replied with two scores in a back and forth first half. Some creative set piece work enabled Wrekin back in to the game but a poor 10 minutes hurt our efforts.
The Under 15 team lost to AB Dab on Saturday. Defence was again the issue with too many missed tackles costing the boys any momentum in the match. Alfie scored an excellent try running the length of the pitch.
The Under 16s again needed to dig deep into their squad after injuries this week. A wonderful 46-7 win was the end result of outstanding finding space through the 10-12 channel and some fantastic and channeled aggression in the forwards.
Badminton
On Wednesday Wrekin fielded four teams to play at Burton Borough. Congratulations to KS3 Boys, KS3 Girls and KS4 Boys who all won their fixtures convincingly. The KS4 Girls were unlucky on this occasion but well done to Cheryl and Natalie who between them had to play every game as our side was short of players. Thanks also to Angel for stepping in at the last minute to play for the KS3 Girls, and Alex for doing likewise for KS4 Boys.
In the Shropshire County Badminton Association League, Wrekin had its first match against an adult team from Madeley, after facing Shropshire Juniors earlier in the term. The team fought hard, but were unable to take any games from these very experienced players. Playing against such fierce opposition is a fantastic learning experience for our squad members, and will absolutely result in their skills being honed and sharpened to take forward into future games.
Golf
The golf team lost out 2-1 to Ellesmere College in the 2nd Round of the ISGA. Jack produced an excellent performance to win his match.
