Sports Report

Wrekin sport continued to thrive in a number of areas last week...

Netball

The Under 15s had a convincing win over Concord College.  The 1st team played nine games in the Millfield Tournament, narrowly losing out to the winners Berkhampstead, but had convincing wins against Millfield, Stowe, Oakham, Haileybury and North London Collegiate. Beating Millfield for the first time is a landmark achievement for Wrekin Netball.

Congratulations to Tamara who has been selected for the Under 15 Nottingham Forest national school games squad.  An excellent achievement, as she is only in Year 9.

Football

The 1st and 2nd XI played a double header at home against Concord college. The 1st XI came out with a 4-4 draw and the 2nd XI ran out 4-3 winners. Excellent results for both teams.

Fencing

In fencing, an impressive set of results was achieved by the Sabre squad at the British Youth Championships in Stratford this Saturday. In the Under 18s Boys Leo achieved a podium position ring ranked 3rd, Will closes followed up in 5th place. In the Under 16 boys event was ranked 5th and Alex 10th.

Congratulations to Leo, Will, and Tom who will be off to the National Qualifiers in May.

Badminton

The Boys Under 14 and Under 16 Badminton teams played tough semi-finals in the Telford Schools Competition against Holy Trinity and Idsall respectively. The Under 16s missed out on the final by only 3 points, the Under 14s by a bigger margin but man of the match goes to Gus who came from 10-0 down in his singles match to lose it 15-13 in the end, showing amazing grit and resilience.

The Shropshire County League squad played Dawley last Wednesday night. They were unable to take any games off them but are learning so much from playing experienced adult teams.

Athletics

In Athletics, Lizzie competed at the EIS in Sheffield in the long jump and 60m. She produced some really good results and Lizzie now looks forward to achieving even stronger results in the upcoming competitions.

Rugby

Where the 1st and Under 14 teams struggled on Wednesday, there were dominant wins for the Under 16s and Under 15s; as well as the excitingly assembled U14(B) team in a block fixture against Shrewsbury School

Cricket

It was the turn of the Under 15 Girls to compete in Indoor Cricket last week.  The squad all played brilliantly throughout the morning, their bowling and fielding being superb in every game.  The batting quickly caught up as confidence grew and in their last two games two different batting pairs scored double figures of the last over, with both games being won on the penultimate ball to finish unbeaten and progress to the next round of the competition.

Hockey

The Under 18 Boys played in their county tournament.  A narrow defeat early on to Shrewsbury College meant the boys needed big wins against the other schools. The team went on to beat Thomas Telford 5-2 and Shrewsbury School 8-0 in the final match. This means they qualify for Midlands Finals in February.

The Saturday boys and staff team continued their unbeaten season with a 1-1 draw with Newport hockey club, with Moritz scoring the Wrekin goal.

Finally, the Under 13 boys had their Shropshire county tournament, winning all three group games. They then went on to beat Packwood 1-0 in the semi final. Then in the final, they beat William Brookes 3-0 to be crowned county champions, they now qualify for Midlands in March.
