Sports Report

As well as normal school fixtures last week, Wrekin sport was was packed with Cup matches and National qualifiers.

Cross Country

The Wrekin team took part  in the Shropshire Schools' Champs. Summer began the day with a fantastic second place finish in the Year 7 Girls race, but sadly Year 7s are too young to progress to the English Schools' Champs. Chloe dominated the Inter Girls race, her fourth consecutive county win, confirming her place as the top Shropshire athlete and progressing to the English Schools. Not to be outdone by his older sister, Charlie stepped up in the Junior Boys race, finishing a fantastic 7th place and progressing to the English Schools finals. Amelia and Malek put in gutsy runs, both finishing in the top 15 in their age groups.

Gymnastics

Henrietta competed in the Emmanuel Cup in Leicester, her first competition coming back from a serious ankle injury in March. In the senior elite - facing very strong competition, Henrietta was placed 3rd on floor & 6th on beam, a strong stepping stone for the English and Welsh championships at end of February.

Climbing

Congratulations to Isobel, who was placed first in the Junior category of the Midlands Youth Climbing series on Sunday.

Rugby

Two outstanding games of rugby at the weekend for the Lancasters, both teams losing out to experienced opposition by a try a piece. Lots of positives seen, but contact and pace work the focus of this week. Our Sevens preparations began for the seniors at the Wirral festival. The seniors 7 played some great rugby, had four good wins on the day. Much to be happy about.

Football

The Under 16 team secured their place in the quarter-finals of the national cup after a gruelling clash with Merchant Taylors’ School. Wrekin dominated throughout but struggled to break the deadlock. Merchant Taylors’ held on for a 0-0 draw, forcing the game into a tense penalty shootout. Once again, Morgan proved to be the hero, making two crucial saves, while Josh, Arran, James, and Jacob held their nerve to find the back of the net. Their composure ensured Wrekin’s progression to the final eight, as they set their sights on surpassing their 2023 semi-final finish.

Hockey

The boys and staff league team beat Stafford Hockey Club 5-0 on Tuesday and then on Saturday, they beat Old Wulfs Hockey Club 8-0 with Moritz scoring five. They still sit top of the league, unbeaten all year. On Wednesday, the 1st XI and 2nd XI travelled to Solihull school. The 1st XI won 4-1 and the 2nd XI won 3-1. On Thursday our Under 16 Boys carried on this winning tradition in the county tournament by beating Adams Grammar 2-0, Thomas Telford 2-0,  SJT 3-0 and Shrewsbury School 2-0. They finished 1st and now qualify for Midlands Finals.

On Saturday, the Under 15s beat King Henry VIII school 5-1 and the Under 14s also won 6-0. The Under 13s and Under 12s both lost out to King Henry in two very close matches. Finally, our Under 12 boys and Under 12 girls had their county tournaments, where both teams played brilliantly winning most of their matches, both finishing county runners up, therefore qualifying for the midlands finals in March.

Netball

An incredible week of results for netball.

The Lancasters secured convincing wins over Moreton Hall and the Under 16s v Newport Girls HS. This weekend saw our three flagship teams, Under 19 Under 16 & Under 14 teams compete in the West Midlands finals against the top netball schools in the region.  The Under 14s finished a creditable 4th place, but the 1st team were outstanding; remaining unbeaten throughout the tournament, including a convincing 15-9 win over Bromsgrove School, and a nail biting 12-11 win in the final over Solihull School to take them to the National Finals in March!
