Sports Report

Wrekin continues to shine in many different sports throughout this busy term. Last week saw Wrekin pupils dominate in many areas.

Cricket

The Under 13 Boys competed in the ECB Indoor Cricket Competition last week. There were some strong performances with bat, ball and in the field, which saw them produce some competitive displays, narrowly missing out on the semi-finals.

Volleyball

Wrekin were involved in a five-set thriller on the volleyball courts at Concord on Wednesday. They took their game to the next level and played some superb volleyball. A huge fight back in the final set led to a gripping finale, but they could not quite secure the victory.

Cross Country

Last Wednesday, the Wrekin cross country team headed to Chetwynd Deer park for a friendly meet against local schools including a strong team from Shrewsbury. The competition, which was run as one age group from Third Form to Upper Sixth saw Chloe (4th Form) dismantle the local competition, running home to the win. Just as impressive was Summer (First Form) who came third overall, beating girls six years her senior. Jake finished a fine second in the boys race and Charlie (2nd Form), finished 10th boy, an excellent performance against the older competition.

Fencing

The Wrekin Epee squad won a decisive victory over the Rugby side achieving a 45-30 win. Club Captain Martin offered, as ever, calm and decisive leadership, whilst winning all his bouts with a strong lead. He was ably joined by Leo, Nick, and Malek who fought valiantly to bring home this win. The squad look forward to a home match against Shrewsbury School after the half term.

Netball

Our Under 13 netballers became County Champions, remaining unbeaten throughout the day. The Lancasters had a clean sweep against Shrewsbury High School last Tuesday, followed up with a creditable 3rd and 4th place finish at the Oswestry Tournament. A different combination 1st team squad had a commanding win over Lucton, as did the U15s.  The U14 “B” team lost out to Lucton’s “A”s.

On Friday, the Under 13s, 14s and 15s all recorded convincing wins over the Samuel Ryder Academy touring teams.

On Saturday, the Under 14s drew 1-1 against NULS while the Under 15s lost 5-1. To round off another good week of hockey, the staff and student league team beat Shrewsbury Hockey club 4-0 and remain unbeaten this season. Well done all!

The Under 16s had a good start to the 7s season with wins over Stonyhurst, Shrewsbury and Wirral Grammar. The Under 15s had an excellent cup win on Friday against The Marches, clinical in attack and defence.
