Year 4 Explore Norman History at Stafford Castle
To bring their 1066 topic to life, Year 4 visited Stafford Castle, a historic Norman Motte and Bailey castle. The trip offered pupils an exciting opportunity to explore the 950-year history of the castle and discover how it has changed over the centuries.
During the visit, pupils learned about castle construction and life, including the purpose of key parts of a Motte and Bailey castle, the role of Norman knights, and the weapons and armour used during the Norman period. They also explored the wider historical context, covering the Norman Conquest, the Battle of Hastings, and the Bayeux Tapestry.
The hands-on experience helped bring their classroom learning to life, giving pupils a deeper understanding of history, the people involved, and the fascinating stories behind these remarkable structures.
